Understand Your Fear to Help with Your Diabetes

The Enneagram is an ancient process. Here is a short description of it.

"The Enneagram is a study of nine basic types of people. It explains why we behave the way we do, and it points to specific directions for individual growth. It's an important tool for improving relationships with family, friends, and coworkers." (1)

I am a 'Six' on the Enneagram. The Six is the 'Questioner'. 'Sixes' are motivated by the need for security.

I love this quote by Charles Schultz - "I've developed a new philosophy. I only dread one day at a time." That was me for most of my life.

Learning the Enneagram, I understand so much better the role of fear in my life. Knowing this, I felt a great weight lifted off me. The curtains have been pulled aside and I understand why I acted, or better, reacted so much during my lifetime.

You might have felt this way when you first found out you had diabetes. You may have been in resistance or denial – “NO, I do not have diabetes.” Maybe you avoided going to the doctor to find out for sure because “ignorance is bliss,” right? Or maybe you said, “Okay, I have diabetes but it’s not that bad right now. I don’t need to do anything yet!”

When you allow fear to run your life, it usually doesn’t end well.

My fear held me back from a lot of things. I wasn't making good decisions. I made impulsive decisions from my head without getting any input from my body. I couldn't trust myself. And I couldn't be who I really was.

When you are too afraid to take care of yourself, in every aspect of your life, you and health will suffer. I'll give you an example. I married in my early twenties so I wasn’t the most mature, centered adult I thought I was. One day, my husband and I got into a big fight and he was marching around saying, 'you're this' and 'you're that.' ‘And you're this. And you're that.'

Even though I knew those things weren't true, I couldn’t speak up for myself because I was terrified. So, I just accepted what he said and thought, “Oh, he's right. He's right. He's right.”

Now I understand how fear impacted my life and how fear “ran” my life for so long. I’m able to take better care of myself. You will be able to take better care of yourself when you let go of your fear around diabetes and get on with better blood sugar control.
