When you have type 2 diabetes, can you still have fun?

Often, diabetes and the effort it takes to manage it can be draining. Building fun into your life can make a world of difference. You can change your outlook on your diabetes and your life with things that are fun and make you feel good doing them.

Start with what you loved to do as a kid. Were you a rock collector? Were you curious about stars and camped out in the backyard to watch them? Did you collect stamps? Did you enjoy hiking or swimming? Did you love fishing – especially fly fishing because you could let the fish go?

When I was a kid, we played outside all day in the summer until time to come home for dinner. We played forts, hide and seek, and other stuff that led to a lot of running around, screaming and laughing.

My parents and I would go camping every summer with our Shasta camping trailer. It was so fun to be away, out of the heat and into the cool mountains with all the streams and hiking trails. We saw a family of beavers once, building their dam. That was awesome – watching them travel back and forth with branches to add to the dam. It felt so good to be out in nature.

After us kids went to bed, my parents and their friends would sit at a picnic table at night playing cards. One night, they all froze as a momma skunk and four little ones walked into our camp and right under the table. My friends and I were awake and we watched silently from inside the trailer. Finally, they left after a few minutes but felt like hours. Thankfully, nobody got sprayed!

Think about using your memories of childhood and how you might use these to jump start what you might do for fun now.
