Be present in your body to manage your diabetes

What does it mean to be ‘in’ your body? Right now, take a minute and check in with yourself. How do you do that? Sit in a chair with your feet flat on the floor. You might want to close your eyes or not, whatever is comfortable for you. Turn your attention inside yourself – starting with your toes – asking, how do my toes feel? Do they ache? Are they cold or warm? Do they tingle? Or are they okay? Next, put your attention on your ankles and ask these same questions. Do this with every part of your body and see what comes up.

Next, ask yourself, how am I feeling? Do I feel relaxed? Do I feel anxious? Am I irritated? Do I feel sad or angry or hungry or happy? Often, we tend to push down feelings, especially if they are uncomfortable. The problem is that you can push feelings and emotions down for only so long before they come out, either as an outburst of anger, fear or tears. So, checking in with your feelings and emotions can help you understand where you are in that moment.

You might notice that your toes feel numb, like they are asleep or that your fingers feel like pins and needles. You might notice that you’re feeling down or even depressed. These could be problems with your diabetes.

You can keep ignoring yourself, your body, your emotions and your mental state – until things take a big turn for the worse. With diabetes, all these feelings and emotions can and will come up. They can take you down a dark road of more damage, more complications and worse mental health. Or you can decide to put yourself on a path to healing. How? By being present, taking steps to address your physical state – what are your blood sugar levels? What have you been eating? Are you getting enough good quality sleep? How are you handling your stress?

Being in your body means you have information. This gives you some control so you can take action. Taking action can empower you to take care of yourself. Taking care of yourself could lead to a longer life with less problems and complications. The decision is in your hands.
