3 Ways to Make Peace with Your Type 2 Diabetes

diabetes peace Jul 19, 2022

Type 2 diabetes is a problem of lifestyle choices. The great news is that you have the power to make changes in what you eat, your activity level, your sleep and more. This is about your life and where you want to go from here. Diabetes can lead to depression and this can make things feel worse. Do you want to continue down the same path you’re on? Or, do you want to try another direction?

How do you do that? If you are anything like me, I have trouble accepting that I have not done my best at taking care of myself. I experience a lot of resistance around taking responsibility for myself. I would rather blame someone else for the way I’ve been treating myself. Unfortunately, I know ONLY I can be responsible! So, my choice is to continue resisting, trying to blame someone else or just accept that I haven’t done my best. It is surprising how much energy it takes to resist the truth of who is truly responsible for my life. Once I get to acceptance, all the pushing and pulling and secretly blaming myself falls away. And I feel lighter and happier.

Next comes forgiveness! It might feel awkward, forgiving yourself but when you do, it feels so good. You can breathe, relax and move on to the next thing in your life.

You can change your mindset. You can look at diabetes as a wake-up call; an opportunity to stop and honestly look at how you got to where you are right now. Rather than beat yourself up with harsh self-talk, think about seeing this as an opportunity to make changes to live your life differently now and in the future. You might be surprised at how things will change for you.Type 2 diabetes is a problem of lifestyle choices.
