4 Tips to Avoid GI Distress in Diabetes

Jan 20, 2022

There are many complications that occur with diabetes when it is not well controlled. Some of these happen in the long term, others happen daily. This is about GI or gastrointestinal distress. Learn more about what it does and how to manage it.

What about the symptoms of GI distress? When your gastrointestinal tract is not as healthy as it could be, you'll likely have gas, bloating, indigestion, abdominal pain, constipation, diarrhea, irritable bowel syndrome, and inflammation.

How do these things impact your diabetes?

First, inflammation leads to insulin resistance. If you have diabetes, you already have insulin resistance, so you don't need anymore of that.

Second, it can lead to something called NAFLD, which stands for non-alcoholic fatty liver disease. This is when fat is being deposited in the liver and it doesn't belong there. Over time, if that keeps happening, it causes the liver to lose some of its function.

Inflammation leads to leaky gut which causes food sensitivities and leads to gastric distress.

It plays a role in the bigger complications of retinopathy neuropathy and nephropathy.

How do you manage it?

First, add fiber to your diet. It cleans out the colon and it supports the microbiome. It slows emptying, and it keeps your blood sugar from spiking.

Second, make sure you include probiotics in your supplement regime or make sure you're eating a good amount of fermented food as it supports the microbiome. It lowers your fasting, blood sugar. It lowers your insulin resistance, and it lowers your fasting insulin.

Three, avoid irritants like alcohol, coffee and spicy foods. That's going to help decrease the inflammation in your gut.

Finally, make sure you have at least one good bowel movement a day, more is better, but one is really good. It's very important to have regular elimination so you can get rid of waste material and toxins. Make sure you drink plenty of water during the day. This will help flush out some of the toxins and keep your bowel movements softer and easier to pass.

I hope that helps.
