Only YOU Can Save Yourself

diabetes managment overall health proactive strength Feb 28, 2023

I believed for a very long time that somebody needed to take care of me, that I could not take care of myself. The funny thing was that I had been taking care of myself all along. I had a job, I had an apartment, I had clothes, I had food, I had money to do whatever I wanted to do. But still, this idea of needing somebody to take care of me persisted. Finally, I took a look at that and I thought, wait a minute. Look at the evidence in front of me! I don't need anybody to take care of me. I can take care of myself.

The reason I bring this up is because sometimes you're in a position where you forget that you are the only person living in your body. You are the only person living your life and you - for better or worse - get to make all the decisions about your life.

If you have a condition like heart disease or diabetes or some other chronic illness it's easy to look for someone else outside of yourself to take care of you.

Of course, we do need doctors, nurses and medical educators to guide us, give us direction and help decide with us about medication and your care. Still, your life, your condition, the management of your health is always in your hands. I want that to be an empowering feeling for you. When you feel empowered, you know that it's your responsibility to take care of yourself, because you're the only one who really can. Then, things will shift a little bit.

I believe that taking care of yourself can become a little bit easier.

You can manage your life, even if it looks like a mess. You can manage your illness. You can stand up for yourself and get the things that you need or want. You deserve to get the resources that you need that are going to help support you in managing your heart disease or diabetes.

When you do that, you're going to feel a bit stronger, a bit happier and more empowered. Soon you'll realize that you have a lot of power within yourself to take the best care you can of yourself, and to live your full, longest, happiest and best life.

There is no knight in shining armor. It's you.
