How will you achieve your diabetic management goals in 2023?

diabetes managment goals new years Dec 27, 2022

Time goes so fast sometimes, especially as we get older. The year comes to an end before you get used to writing 2022 on everything. You may have goals in different areas of your life like work, family, personal and more. When you have diabetes, having a goal to keep your blood sugar steady and within a good range to avoid complications can lead to better management of blood sugar and even reverse your type 2 diabetes.

It all depends on what you want for yourself and what you are willing to do to achieve it. It’s not easy to change aspects of your lifestyle that have become so routine, they are deeply ingrained habits. Routines and habits relieve your brain from making certain lifestyle decisions like “should I brush my teeth this morning” and apply that energy to the myriad of decisions you have to make daily. When these are so ingrained, you can change your environment and get uncomfortable. This allows you to get out of your rut, make new neural connections in your brain for something different.

For example, I needed to make a change in how I thought about myself. I felt stuck in the past and could not see a way to think differently. So, I changed up my home. I moved myself into a different bedroom and changed the purpose and function of the other two. It felt really strange for a while. I felt “off”, a little out of balance. I had to think more about what I was doing rather than just acting. This is getting out the neural rut my brain was in and this action helped me see myself differently.

With diabetes, many aspects of your lifestyle affect your ability to be metabolically flexible, meaning that your body can respond to changes in what you eat without sending your blood sugar higher and higher. People with type 2 diabetes are not metabolically flexible which means they are not able to switch easily between using glucose or fat for fuel. Insulin plays a key role here.
