It’s time to think about your diabetes goals for 2024

diabetes managment goals new year Dec 19, 2023

Generally speaking, the new year is a great time to set some goals that might include losing weight, eating healthier, doing more exercise, reducing clutter, or getting organized. All of these are goals that take time, attention and effort because they are lifelong goals. However, we get started and sometimes our effort just fizzles. There's a feeling of disappointment and failure.

A goal should be specific, achievable and have a timeframe. There are lots of steps between starting and achieving your goals. Why talk about this right now when we’re in the middle of or preparing for Christmas, Hanukkah, Kwanzaa and other December holidays.

I bring this up now at this time because if you have a goal to start something in January, is there something you can do now to give you a step up, to start your goal in January? Well, yes, there is!

Whatever your goal is, think of one small activity you can do and put it some place in your routine that makes sense and makes it super easy to do. What you're doing is creating a habit that will set you up for success.

For example, let's say your goal is to exercise more. You might start right now simply walking. Start with a 10 minute walk, five minutes out, five minutes back, easy. Even if the weather is crappy. But on a day when you say you're going to go for a walk and you don't feel like doing it, just put your walking shoes on and walk around the house once and take them off. That counts!

When you do this on a regular basis, you start to feel some success and this feeling of success can really help you through the holiday season! When you feel like things might be out of control for you, remind yourself there's this one thing that you're doing successfully and on a consistent basis!

When you get to January, you say, “okay, now I'm going to start my exercise program,” but wait, you already have! You've already started and you've already had some success with it. It will jumpstart your goal in the new year.

Give it a try and see what happens!
